What exactly is a lifelong learning program?

Findings of studies in the medical field indicate that people who retire and continue to learn are physically and mentally healthier. They also show that older people are avid learners. Because universities across our nation have recognized this, they are offering lifelong learning programs in their communities to people ages 55 and up.

No tests, no grades and no teachers. At NLU our program is modeled around peer learning made popular by the Great Books Foundation where discussion is the key. Members select and submit topics for approval to a committee of their peers. They then become coordinators for the class -- choosing the text and planning the schedule. Once in class, members volunteer as discussion leaders. By reading from a common text, everyone comes to class with the same frame of reference. Leaders pose the questions and discussion begins.

A program run by the members. If you decide to join our program at NLU, you will become a member of a community of lifelong learners that depends on your participation for its success. We hope that you will volunteer for at least one aspect of the organization. Whether it is stuffing envelopes, joining a committee or running for a position on the advisory board, your contribution will be an important one. Share your particular area of expertise with us and we will put it to good use. If you have an idea for a class, and are willing to be a coordinator that will be greatly appreciated.

When you are a newcomer to lifelong learning. Newcomers are urged to feel comfortable in their classes before volunteering as discussion leaders. Some people want to lead right away. But most want to be in class a while to see how things are done. There will be opportunities for members to learn how to lead a class and to frame the right questions for a discussion.

If you are reading about the Lifelong Learning Institute after the semester has begun and want to join or observe a class in action, please let us know. Call 224-233-2366 or email us at joan.marks@nl.edu and we will be happy to tell you all about our program.
