HOW DO I... Know how long my materials are checked out for and what doesn't circulate? |

| - Most NLU books circulate for 12 weeks (look under "Loan Period for Books" for exceptions).
- Reference material does not circulate.
- Journals do not circulate.
- Curriculum materials do not circulate.
- The NLU Library Circulation department is available at 1-800-443-5522, ext. 5503 or via e-mail at libcirc@nl.edu.
- Videos and DVDs circulate only to faculty. Students may view videos or DVDs in the library. Call Wheeling for reservations at 1-800-443-5522, ext. 5515 or ext. 5335.

| Request materials if NLU does not own them? |
|
| - We will request books, journal articles and other materials not available in the NLU Library from other libraries.
- Interlibrary loan requests usually are filled within 1 - 3 weeks.
- Loan periods may vary from library to library and the date due will appear on the book band.
- Overdue fines vary from library to library and the borrower is responsible for any fines or fees incurred.

| The following materials are generally not available through ILL: - Whole issues of paper journals and periodicals
- Rare, archival, and genealogical materials
- Most dissertations
- Books published within the last year, including current fiction
- Current textbooks
- Films, videos, CDs, records, audiocassettes, and other multimedia materials
These materials may be non-circulating, charged out, or on reserve at another library. They may circulate only for short periods of time (four weeks or less) and are subject to recall. Accordingly, library patrons should not: - Rely on ILL to obtain textbooks or other high-demand materials or expect library staff to obtain syllabi or reading lists and request required texts for particular courses; and
- Anticipate extended loan periods for materials obtained through ILL.

| Check out a book? |
|
| - A valid NLU ID is required to check out material. If you do not have a NLU ID, see Student Services.
- A valid NLU ID will permit you to check out circulating material from any of the 71 CARLI Libraries.

| Know when to return my materials? |
|
| - Library books circulate for 12 weeks with some exceptions: DANTES material (1 week), and videos (usually 2 weeks - faculty only).
- Other libraries in CARLI may have different loan periods.

| Know how to renew my materials? |
|
| - NLU books may be renewed a maximum of two additional 12-week periods unless a request has been made for the book.
- DANTES (1-week) books can be renewed three times by phone or in person.
- NLU books may be renewed through the online catalog, over the telephone, or in person.

When renewing books through the NLU Online catalog, click on Book Search from the NLU Library Home Page and then click on NLU Book Catalog. On the following page click on MY ACCOUNT and enter your Library ID (19xxxxxxxx2840 x=your NLU Student ID minus the "N") and last name and click on LOGIN.” -
As you scroll down, the first area will be Items Checked Out organized by owning library. To renew a book, click in the box to its left to select Renew, scroll down to the bottom of Items Checked Out and click on Renew Selected Items. - If the Renew box is not visible, it means your account is blocked (due to fines/fees, overdues, etc.) and you should contact the circulation department.
- Other CARLI libraries may have different policies for renewal of their materials. In general, books from other CARLI libraries may be renewed through the NLU Online catalog. If you are unable to renew item(s) online, please have the book available, and contact the Wheeling Circulation Department at 1-800-443-5522, ext. 5503.

Account for overdue material? |
|
| - Items not returned within 4 weeks of due date are assumed lost and will be billed for the cost of replacement and a $10.00 non-refundable processing fee.
- Library privileges will be suspended for overdue books or lost books.
- Library privileges may be blocked for exceeding certain thresholds (e.g. number of overdue books or lost books, overdue fines, or lost book bills).

| Gain access to the Internet? |
|
| - All NLU Campus Libraries have public computers for Internet access. These computers are generally reserved for Library research. If you have questions, please ask Library personnel for help.
|

| Make photocopies? |
|
| - Copy machines are available in all of our libraries.
- Copies are nine cents per page with a copy card or your NLU Student ID.
- The copy machines do not accept change or cash. The Library does not give change or cash for copies or copy cards.

|
| - If you need assistance designing you research strategies, call the Reference Help Desk at 1-800-443-5522, x5495.
