Type 09 Certification
Program Description:
The NLU Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Education is designed for those of you who are not yet certified to teach but have already earned your bachelor’s degree in:
Your degree will qualify you for Type 09 certification as a secondary school teacher (grades 6-12) or Type 10 certification (grades K-12) for those with a bachelor's degree in Foreign Language by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). This program is also available as a non-degree certificate for eligible individuals.
How You Will Learn:
Secondary Education is taught using a cohort model, which means you will go through the program with the same group of 12-20 students. NLU graduates like the cohort model because of the support and friendships provided by their fellow students throughout the program.

- How to develop and implement a progressive, student-centered approach to teaching and learning.
- How to develop, apply and evaluate best practices in teaching.
- How to apply theories of teaching and learning.
- How to use interdisciplinary techniques in instruction.
- How to manage the classroom environment.
- How to conduct empirical, quantitative, interpretive and critical research
Where You Can Take the Program:
At NLU’s campuses in Chicago, Elgin, Lisle, Skokie (North Shore) and Wheeling as well as on the campus of McHenry Community College.
