Elementary Education (M.A.T.)
Type 03 Certification

Program Description:

The NLU Master of Arts in Teaching Elementary Education is designed for those of you who are new to teaching. You will combine classroom study with practical classroom experience and learn more about best practices in your field. Your course work and degree requirements, which must be completed within a six-year period, make you eligible for Type 03 Certification in Illinois (K-9 Certificate) and the 1-9 License in Wisconsin.

The NLU Subsequent Certification in Elementary Education, a non-degree program, is designed for those of you who are teachers who hold an Illinois teaching certificate in early childhood, secondary or special education.

How You Will Learn:

Elementary Education is taught using a cohort model, which means you will go through the program with the same group of 12-20 students. NLU graduates like the cohort model because of the support and friendships provided by their fellow students throughout the program.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to apply teaching methods in language arts, reading, math, social studies, sciences, and health and physical education.
  • How to assess and evaluate teaching techniques and methodologies.
  • How to use research to enhance teaching practices.
  • A broader understanding of contemporary issues in elementary education.

Where You Can Take The Program:

At NLU's campuses in Chicago, Elgin, Lisle, Skokie (North Shore) and Wheeling as well as our Wisconsin campuses in Milwaukee and Beloit.
