Frequently Asked Questions: Tuition Assistance Overview for Military Service Members

National-Louis University is delighted to play an important role in providing you with the education you need to reach your academic goals. As you begin your program or make your decision about starting, you have a number of items to consider, not the least being your military tuition assistance benefit. The following information is intended to provide you with a brief overview of your TA benefits. Please be reminded that your education office will make the final decision on your eligibility and benefits. This information is intended to provide you with a general overview.

What are the annual limits for military tuition assistance?

$4,500.00 per fiscal year (Navy is slightly less), the fiscal year is from October 1 - September 30.  This cap is based on available fund at the time of application.  The Navy cap may be different.  For all questions, check with your Education Office.

Can I assume that I will receive a total of $4,500 during this period of time?

No, not always. Undergraduate students receive $166.67 per quarter hour and graduate students receive $250.00 per semester hour. It depends on how many credits you take in a fiscal year and if you have already used TA at another school in the same year. To determine how much TA you are eligible to receive, you will multiplying the quarter hours you will take between October 1st and September 30th by $166.67.

1 QH  =  $166.67
3 QH  =  $500.00
4 QH  =  $666.00
5 QH  =  $833.00

I heard that the military funds 100% of my tuition. So does this mean I don't have to pay anything out of pocket or through my Top Up benefits?

The military only funds 100% of the tuition up to the CAP of $4,500.00 annually, so they don't fund 100% of the entire cost of the program.

How should I calculate military tuition assistance based on my schedule?

To calculate your assistance use the following formula:
Review all classes that start between October 1 and Sept. 30th. Multiply the quarter hours of the classes by $166.67. If the dollar amount goes over $4,500.00, you will exceed the cap and ONLY receive the maximum benefit of $4,500.

What is the TOP-UP program?

The TOP-UP program is a benefit offered under the Montgomery GI bill. This is a benefit you must have signed up for with the military and be eligible to receive. Many students do have this benefit, but not all. The TOP-UP program will cover the balance of the tuition NOT covered by TA IF, and this is very important only IF, you have do not exceed your cap. If you exceed the $4,500 cap, you will not receive TA or TOP-UP and will need to consider other resources such as financial aid. NLU works diligently to maximize TA and TOP-UP benefits with our scheduling procedures.

How do I apply for TA or TOP-UP?

Through your education office.

PLEASE NOTE: You MUST apply for TA BEFORE their class starts. If you request TA after the class starts, your education office will not approve your request.

Once the TA voucher is approved, you will fax it to Diane Meek, 703-749-3024 (dmeek@nl.edu) who submits it to the military for payment.

TOP-UP: You will also apply for TOP-UP through your education office. First you will complete the application, have it signed by your education officer and then forward it to the Dept. of Veteran Affairs. You will send every TA form thereafter to the VA office so the VA will know how much to pay you. Please review your TA vouchers for accuracy so you are paid properly. Also, please remember to mail or fax the vouchers to the VA for each class or term.

Is there a limit on TOP-UP funding?

Yes, TOP-UP is limited to 36 months of payments.

Do all education offices pay the same way for TA?

No. Some education offices will pay class by class while others pay term by term. This is important to know because it makes a difference in the amount the student may be eligible to receive.

Once I fill out my TA, what do I do next?

Fax a copy to NLU so we can send a bill to your education office. Mail a copy to VA if you are using Top Up and always keep a copy for your records.
