EMERGENCY CLOSING PROCEDURES

FOR THE NORTHERN VIRGINIA/WASHINGTON DC CAMPUS

In the event of inclement weather or an emergency situation, the following procedures will be followed to determine the status of classes at the Northern Virginia/Washington DC Campus.

  1. If inclement weather or another emergency situation threatens the start of the workday, the decision to cancel or delay the office opening will be made by 6:00 am.  If the opening of the workday is delayed and the situation is still threatening, a final decision to cancel the remainder of the workday and classes will be made no later than 11:00 am.

  2. If inclement weather or another emergency situation is experienced during the workday and before the start of the classes, a decision to cancel classes will be made no later than 3:00 pm.  Any decision to close will apply to all students at all locations.

  3. The classes held at off-campus locations will follow the decision of the host institution (i.e. military base, school or hotel).

  4. The cancellation or delay of classes on the weekend will be made by 6:00 am the day of class.

  5. If the weather turns bad or an emergency situation occurs while classes are in session, the instructor has the authority to release the class early.

  6. Closings will be announced as follows:
  • The Northern Virginia NLU voicemail message will be updated to announce the closing.  The phone number is 202-661-5800.
  • Announcements will be made on television stations NBC 4, Fox 5, ABC 7 and CBS 9.  The announcement will also be made on WTOP 1500 AM.
  • The NLU website will be updated as quickly as possible.
  • An announcement will be sent to all students through their NLU e-mail accounts.
