Observation Hours FAQs _______________________________________________________ What are the requirements for observations? Students in the Secondary Education Program are responsible for one hundred hours of observation during the course of the program. The required hours and courses observations are completed in are as follows: 25 hours in SEC502: Introductory Methods in Secondary Education. These hours may be done in any classroom, not just your subject area, but must be in grades 6-12, unless you're earning a Type 10 Foreign Language license. For Type 10 in Foreign Language the observation hours can be in grades K-12. 15 hours in SPE500: Introduction to Exceptional Children & Adolescents. These hours must be in special education classrooms and meet requirements of the special education course instructor. 45 hours in SEC Subject Area Methods Courses: These hours must be in your subject area and be in classrooms grade 6-12. Students may complete 15 of these required hours before the start of the course. 15 hours in EPS 511: These hours will be completed in middle and high school classrooms. Back to the Top Where do I send my observation logs? After students have had all their logs signed, they should attach the original logs with the instructor signatures to the Observation Hour Summary Sheet and send them by certified mail or drop them off in person to Bonnie Daleiden (second floor, Wheeling Campus) before the start date of student teaching. Students should also remember to keep a copy for themselves. Completion of observation hours is a requirement for student teaching and certification. Students should include the Pre-Student Teaching Checklist along with their logs and Observation Hour Summary Sheet. How do I line up observations? In the SEC 502 course, your instructor may organize up to 3 full days of observation in area schools. To make up the rest of the hours, you will be required to call schools and set them up yourself. Here are some guidelines for making those calls: Ask to speak to the principal of the building and explain that you are a teacher in training and are trying to schedule observation hours for your methodology course. Some school require a letter from the University verifying your student status and/or a background check with fingerprints from the Illinois State Police. To get a letter of introduction, contact: Wilma Stiltz Administrative Assistant Secondary Education Department 224.233.2294 wilma.stiltz@nl.edu Provide her with your name, student ID number, content area, course title, and your term in the program, the contact name of the administrator who needs the letter and the fax number or e-mail address to send the letter and she will make sure the letter gets to the school. You will need to have an observation log signed off after every hour of your visit. You can get blank observation logs here: Observation Log. Back to the Top Can I waive observation hours? Students who started their program during or after the Spring 2007 quarter cannot apply to waive hours, since the Department has its own specific learning outcomes and assignments connected with fulfilling the required observation hours.
