Mission Statement of the Educational Foundations and Inquiry Department

The mission of the Department of Educational Foundations and Inquiry is to develop humane and scholarly practitioners. These practitioners will be equipped with the philosophical, sociological, psychological, cultural, anthropological, and critical inquiry competencies needed to critique and improve both school life and the social processes affecting education settings and systems.

Students taking Educational Foundations and Inquiry Courses:

  • explore and conduct research and recognize the connection between various modes of inquiry and knowledge production and its consequences
  • examine everyday normative assumptions, ideas and practices and develop alternatives
  • investigate the influence of social, economic, political, and cultural forces on the evolution of educational ideas and institutions
  • analyze and critique empirical, interpretive, and critical research produced by others and relate them to their own practices
  • develop capacities and dispositions to conduct research within different paradigms and in various settings
  • identify and address ethical concerns embedded in various components of the research process
  • will see their own research as fundamental to their professional practice, their growth, and school change

All MAT and MEd students take courses in the Department of Educational Foundations and Inquiry, although it is not a degree program. Educational Foundations and Inquiry now offers the CSI Doctoral Program.
