CMB Faculty
The Faculty of the Department of the College of Management and Business represents a range of backgrounds, training, experience, and interests. Included are members who have had extensive practical as well as academic experience in a variety of geographical areas and within different cultural settings. Many have worked overseas with government agencies as well as with community level. They are also called on to serve in advisory capacities to governmental agencies, legislative bodies, and community organizations.
All Faculty members serve in a consulting capacity on different planning projects. All are involved in ongoing research, usually at an applied level, and in publishing research findings and conclusions. This range of experience serves to enrich the planning curriculum.
Faculty are available to consult or as speakers in their areas of specialization.

Willie Burnside, MBA

Expert in teaching, computer languages, operating systems, applications and curriculum development. Burnside has used this expertise as he's taught and developed a variety of courses at NLU including Introduction to Computing, Programming, Database Applications, System Analysis, Operating Systems and Management Information Systems.

Bonnie Flynn, Ed.D., MPH (Health Care)

Bonnie Flynn worked in the health care accreditation field for over 15 years before becoming a full-time faculty member at NLU in 2005. In addition, previously, Dr. Flynn was an adjunct instructor for NLU and other colleges and universities since 1999. She has a Master of Public Health degree and a Doctorate in Adult Education. Her doctoral dissertation focused on the transformative effects of adult education related to accelerated learning.

Mike Fontaine, Ph.D. (Marketing)

Michael Fontaine has spent a number of years in marketing positions in corporate and not-for-profit organizations. Notably, he was Public Relations Manager for the Printing Industries Association of Southern California and Marketing Director for the Greater East St. Louis Arts Council. He has also served as Director of Education for Vocational Training Institutions in the Greater St. Louis area. Dr. Fontaine has spent a number of years writing for the St. Louis American Newspaper and the Suburban Journals on the Illinois and Missouri sides of the Mississippi River. He has a B.A. in Journalism/Sociology from Indiana University; a Masters in Public Administration, from Indiana University; and a Doctorate in Marketing from the Union Institute and University, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Catherine Honig, Ph.D. (Industrial/Organizational Psychology)

Having worked in both corporate and academic environments, Catherine Honig joined the NLU faculty in 1990. Dr. Honig is a graduate of Bowling Green State University, where she earned both her master's degree (1982) and her Ph.D. (1987) in industrial/organizational psychology. In the corporate setting, she managed a marketing research team in a Fortune 500 company.
During her tenure as an NLU faculty member, she has been actively involved in designing a series of research projects and has co-written and presented applied research papers on a variety of management & leadership subjects (e.g., authentic leadership, subordinate perceptions of "boss" behaviors, gender-related perceptions) as well as in the area of outcomes assessment. Most recently, she has turned her attention to the area of online teaching and has earned the Sloan Consortium's prestigious Online Teaching Certificate.
Dr. Honig has served in a host of administrative positions at NLU. She presently serves as the Graduate Chair of Programs in the College of Management and Business.

Paula Jordan, Ph.D. (Economics)

Paula Jordan is an Associate Professor in the College of Management and Business and has been a fulltime faculty member since 1998. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Notre Dame, with research focused in the electric utility industry. She holds an Masters in Economics from the University of Notre Dame and a Bachelors in Business Administration from Ferris State University. She has 8 years of experience in the gas and electric utility industries, where she held a variety of positions. She was a Derivatives Trader and a Risk Strategy Analyst where she analyzed data, structured deals, and traded Natural Gas, Oil, Coal, and Electricity contracts. She has significant experience in strategic planning and developing forecasting models. Most recently she has experience teaching international students in various countries.

Expert in a variety of areas including: Research and practice in personality and leadership assessment, cognitive and intellectual assessment, and adult education. Donna Kayton has worked as an associate professor, associate dean, assistant dean, and management consultant. Among the courses Dr. Kayton has taught or developed at the undergraduate and graduate levels are: Organizational Behavior, Organizational Analysis, Leadership Assessment, and Critical Thinking.

Ellen McMahon, Ed.D., MBA (Adult Education; Management)

Ellen McMahon is currently an Associate Professor of Management at National-Louis University. Since 1995, McMahon has taught courses using a variety of delivery modes including the traditional face-to-face classroom, in a totally online environment, and using a combination of both in blended delivery. In 2002, her NLU peers awarded her the prestigious Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. McMahon spent six months, (2005-2006) as a Fulbright Teaching Scholar at the University of Sarajevo, Faculty of Economics, in Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina. She recently completed a three-year appointment (2006-2009) to the Peer Review Committee for the Balkan and Baltic States Fulbright Scholars Program, sponsored by the Council on International Exchange of Scholars, U.S. State Department. McMahon has written introductions and chapters on several management books with colleagues she met while living in Bosnia. This work has been translated into the local language. She is on the Editorial Board of the South East European Journal of Economics and Business.

Claudia Miller, Ph.D., MLS (ASCP) (Health Studies)

Claudia Miller is a medical technologist/clinical laboratory scientist by profession and a professor by rank. She developed the medical technology program at National-Louis University (NLU) and served as chair for the Allied Health department. She does consulting work for university and hospital-based programs through the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. She also consults on assessment issues with colleges and universities. She has developed many courses at NLU including requisites for the Health Care Leadership (HCL) and Masters in Health Services Administration (MHA) programs, Science of Health and Nutrition and other health related offerings. She actively presents workshops at state and national meetings.

Jim Nowotarski, MBA (Management Information Systems)

Jim Nowotarski has been a consultant and educator in Information Technology (IT) his entire career. He worked at the consulting firm Accenture in Chicago for more than 20 years on large information systems projects for enterprises such as Baxter Health Care, IBM, the Internal Revenue Service, and The Northern Trust Bank. He also led Accenture research and development initiatives in systems development, eCommerce, and offshore development. He taught numerous classes at Accenture's training facilities in Asia, Europe, and North America. He has worked with CIOs and researchers on improving the ability of organizations and individuals to effectively apply information technology. He manages NLU's BS in Management Information Systems Program and also teaches in NLU's BS in Management and MBA programs. He has served on the governance board for NLU's use of information technology. External to NLU, he is a member of the Association for Information Systems, Information Systems Audit and Control Association, Society for Information Management, and a joint industry-academic working group on Value-Driven Change Leadership. He volunteers with i.c. stars, which provides IT career programs and services for Chicago's inner-city young adults.

Paul O'Neill, Ed.D. (Human Resources Development)

Paul O'Neill has expertise in several areas: Corporate Management Development, Strategic Management, and Financial Planning. In the corporate world, he headed up Management Education/Development for three large companies and has personally conducted management workshops for senior managers in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and China. He has also conducted Strategic Planning weekends for both non-profit and privately-held organizations. He was recently certified as a CFP (Certified Financial Planner), and has provided pro-bono financial planning services to individuals as well as to the NLU Financial Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees. He has been a faculty member at NLU for 30 years. He has developed and revised many courses at NLU including: Leading Through Vision and Strategy, Managing Continuous Improvement, Strategic Management, Capstone Simulation Workshop, and Financial Markets.

Brian Reynolds is an expert in Business Administration and International Business. With over 35 years of experience in higher education, Reynolds has been a lecturer, assistant registrar, assistant dean and faculty member. He has also taught and developed a number of programs such as: Business Basics, Business Law, Business Policy, and Principles of Marketing.

David Rice worked as an aviation physiologist, a respiratory therapist, a teacher, an instructional designer and a manager in military, community college, hospital, and university settings. He's been involved in some aspect of designing, delivering, evaluating or managing educational programs for most of his professional life. David's current academic focus is health care administration including the external and internal analysis of health care organizations. He also maintains long standing interests in the historical and social origins of health systems and the use of simulations and games in health care education and training.

David San Filippo has been a corporate officer in several national & international insurance and managed care organizations. He has also developed an information technology company and several managed care companies. He is also a mental health specialist who has specialized in trauma and grief counseling and education. San Filippo has taught Health Care Leadership and Organizational Leadership undergraduate courses, and Health Services Administration graduate courses. David has developed online courses for NLU and teaches both face-to-face and online courses.

Teaching, counseling, and consulting have been three common threads of Pat's broad and diversified professional experience. She has taught at elementary, high school and college levels. Pat has also facilitated workshops and consulted on a variety of areas related to management development. She has designed courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels at NLU including: Advanced Organizational Behavior, Organizational Analysis, Assessing Managerial Proficiency, Human Resource Development, and Managing Diversity in the Workplace.

Scheidt (OMIT: has taught and) developed courses at NLU including: Marketing for Managers, Consumer Behavior, Consumer Decision Making, Diversity in the Workplace, Advertising and Promotion, and Advanced Business Writing. She teaches in the areas of Marketing, Management, Organizational Behavior, and Communication.

Doug Schreder is an Associate Professor in the College of Management and Business. His experience is in teaching Macroeconomics, Managerial Economics, and Strategic Management. Howard Zacks, Ph.D. (Economics)

As professor, taught MBA courses in Macroeconomics and Managerial Accounting as well as undergraduate courses in Managerial Budgeting and Finance. Engaged in research activities leading to updates of the content and student activities in these courses. Actively participated on, and held numerous leadership roles on, university and college committees. Howard Zacks integrated the current business cycle research of the National Bureau of Economic Research, the current decision processes of the Federal Reserve's Federal Open Market Committee, and the current indicator approach of the Conference Board into the MBA Macroeconomics course. He also reconfigured the MBA Managerial Accounting course as well as the undergraduate Managerial Budgeting and Finance courses to emphasize content and applications appropriate to managers rather than accountants. Howard also introduced new online discussion topics in all courses taught.
