Present A Course In Tropical Marine Biology (LAN 420) For Students, Teachers and Nature Lovers

With One Week of Field Experience In

Jamaica, West Indies

June 13-27, 2005 (June 19-27 in Jamaica)

(LAN 420: Tropical Marine Biology can be taken as a science elective)

Join us on our Caribbean expedition. Study coral reefs, rocky and sandy beaches, tide pools, mangrove swamps and sea grass beds. A staff of biologists led by Dr. June B. Steinberg,, zoologist from the Science Department at NLU, will teach you about the ecology of this exciting region. We will meet Monday to Thursday evenings from 6:00-9:00 PM in room 206 of the NLU Evanston campus and then fly to Jamaica for the thrilling field experience of this course. For those students unable to attend the evening sessions, arrangements can be made to do the work on the Internet with the consent of the instructor.

In Jamaica, comfortable boats will deliver us to differing areas of the calm, sheltered coral reef lying just offshore. We will snorkel in crystal clear waters among exquisitely colored fish, swim into a cave full of bats and trudge through mangrove swamps. We will do a night snorkel and see bioluminescent organisms which will provide us with nature's own fireworks. We will learn to identify the organisms we see and be able to explain their adaptations to specific environments. We will learn about mangrove succession and about intertidal zonation and the key indicator organisms of the zones. All this will happen in an environment where every overturned rock reveals brittle stars, sea urchins, sea cucumbers and crabs, and intertidal zonation is extraordinary, with no fewer than 8 snail and 3 chiton species resisting the waves of the rocky shore.

The laboratory is associated with a Jamaican-owned and operated waterfront hotel with large airy rooms and private baths (double). The excellent food is a mixture of Jamaican and American style cuisine, served by our Jamaican hosts. We will visit Dunn's River Falls, where you can climb the 600 ft. high falls in the water, led by a guide. You will experience being in a third world country by visiting a native market in the mountains and learning about Jamaican life.

(Enrollment is limited, please apply early)
