About Us
History
Health Studies has a rich tradition, having begun almost 20 years ago. The predecessor to the Health Care Leadership Program was the Bachelor of Arts in Management and Education in Health Care (BAMEH). BAMEH was among the first programs of its kind in the United States because it combined an accelerated course format integrating workplace experiences with classroom discussions, along with the cohort model emphasizing highly interactive discourse as the primary method of teaching. The result was a powerful learning approach. That approach is still in place today with the Health Care Leadership Program, though it has undergone many refinements.
Several clinical programs were also offered in the 1980’s and 1990’s, including bachelor degree programs in respiratory therapy, clinical laboratory technology, and radiation therapy. Although these programs are not offered at this time, the experiences gained by our faculty through offering these programs plus many strong relationships forged with health care provider organizations have enhanced our current program offerings, and bear witness to the strong heritage of Health Studies at National-Louis University.
More recently, with the support of health care leaders in organizations throughout our service area, the Health Studies Department developed and inaugurated The Master in Health Services Administration.

The Health Studies Advisory Council consists of a group of leaders in the health care industry that interact with Health Studies faculty and students in a collaborative way to help guide the development of curriculum and ensure that Health Studies programs are configured and presented in the most contemporary and socially responsible manner.
Benefits of the Field-Based, Accelerated Format
The HCL and MHA programs use the field-based, accelerated format in conjunction with the cohort model. This format has many features and advantages, as indicated above in the History section of this page. Perhaps our current students and alumni, whose comments are summarized below in the Alumni and Program Assessment sections of this Website, best describe the benefits to students.
The Health Studies Department is also committed to exploring other delivery formats including: online course delivery, weekend course delivery, and traditional campus-based course delivery. Several of these formats have been used, and are being evaluated for future use.
Please Note: We are currently reorganizing and restructuring our web site. In the coming weeks we will be adding new content and many new features to assist prospective & current students as well as our Alumni. If you experience or encounter any problems, please feel free to contact the webmaster.
