Sample program structure

Years 1 & 2
During your freshman and sophomore years at NLU or a community college, take general education courses plus 100 and 200 level courses in your major field.

Year 3 & 4
During your junior and senior years at NLU, complete requirements for your major in one of four fields: Biology, English, Mathematics or Social Science. Receive your B.A.

Year 5
Begin the NLU Secondary Education M.A.T. program. Complete three quarters (19 SH) of coursework, observation and student teaching. Receive your teacher certification. Once you receive certification, you may choose to continue the master’s program or to enter the job market, start a teaching job, then re-enroll later to finish your MAT degree.

Year 5 1/2
Take 5 courses (12 SH) of coursework and receive the MAT. These remaining 12 semester hours may be postponed, but must be completed within 5 years of the start date.

Earning your master’s degree usually results in a boost on the salary schedule (e.g., in the Chicago school system, obtaining a master’s degree currently results in a pay increase of approximately $2,400 per year).
