Completing the Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note

If this is the first time you are borrowing a Federal Stafford Loan, you must complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) before you can receive any loan funds.  An MPN is a legal agreement between you and the lender to repay the loan funds.  Repayment starts 6 months after you graduate, leave school, or cease to be enrolled at least half time.  You will only need to complete one MPN unless you are changing lenders.  NLU does not participate in the William D. Ford Direct Loan Program.  Borrowers who had previous Direct Loans are considered first time Federal Family Educational Loan Program (FFELP) borrowers and should choose an NLU preferred FFELP lender.

The Federal Stafford Loan MPN is typically mailed to students by the lender after your loan has been certified by the school.  To expedite this process, you can complete the MPN online.  For more information about the Stafford Loan and lenders, please see our Stafford Loan Guide.
