Bachelor of Arts in Human Services
NATIONAL-LOUIS UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR of ARTS in Human Services (HS)
The Bachelor of Arts in Human Services (HS) program is designed to assist students in developing a broad understanding of the issues concerning human services through coursework and practical experiences. Students work together with their peers, instructors and practitioners to understand theory, develop professional skills and gain experience. Students are prepared for entry into careers in the field of human services.
ADMISSION
NATIONAL-LOUIS UNIVERSITY (NLU) offers students who complete the prescribed program at a community college that has a transfer guide with NLU, the opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Human Services (HS) with full recognition of the work completed. Students who do not complete the prescribed program will have all previous college work evaluated on a course-by-course basis.
University Admission Requirements:

- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
- A cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better on a 4.0 scale on all previous coursework.
Admission to the Human Services Program:
Students who successfully complete all of the prescribed coursework at the community college, and meet the Human Services program admission requirements, will be granted admission to the Bachelor of Arts in Human Services program. To be eligible for admission the Bachelor of Arts in Human Services degree program students must:
- Complete the general education and other courses listed in the community college transfer guide.
- Complete all of the program requirements, at the community college, in the Human Services programs with the grade of "C" or better. Students with 'D' grade in Human Services core course must retake the course and earn a grade of 'C' or better before being admitted to the NLU Human Services program.
- Students selecting the Practicum Option need to consult with an NLU faculty advisor approximately one year prior to transferring to NLU. Admission into the Human Services major, Practicum Option, is a separate admission process.
ASSESSMENT
Writing and math assessments will be administered at the time of initial enrollment at NLU. These assessments are used for academic advising purposes.
GENERAL EDUCATION
The Human Services major requires some specific general education courses as preparation for the program. See the table below for those course requirements.

THE BACHELOR OF ARTS IN HUMAN SERVICES PROGRAM:
The following Human Services courses may be completed at the community college:
Introduction to Human Services (5 QH)
Introduction to Applied Group Process (5 QH)
Principles and Dynamics of Interviewing (5 QH)
Theory and Techniques of Crisis Intervention (5 QH)
Principles of Family Intervention (5 QH)
Students must complete the PreProfessional courses listed above with a 3.0 GPA for consideration for acceptance into the Human Services major. Only Human Services courses with a grade of ‘C’ or better will be accepted in transfer.

Human Services major with Practicum Option:
The Human Services major with Practicum Option allows students to apply what they have learned in a supervised setting, through a professional studies sequence of four quarters of practicum with supporting classroom instruction this option requires 20 QH of practicum, of which 5 QH may be transferred into NLU. The practicum hours fulfill 20 quarter hours of Human Services ‘electives under advisement’ (See below). Students desiring to complete the practicum at NLU will need to maintain a 3.0 (B) grade point average in Human Services courses for consideration for acceptance into the practicum. Students selecting the Practicum Option need to consult with an NLU faculty advisor approximately one year prior to transferring to NLU. Admission into the Human Services major, Practicum Option, is a separate admission process.

Human Services Electives Under Advisement:
The Human Services program requires 50 QH of Human Services elective course work. Students must consult with their NLU faculty advisor to select courses that match an identified area of specialization. Students are encouraged to take courses that enhance their area of Human Services focus or interest; this may include courses from different departments and disciplines. These elective courses may be taken at NLU or other accredited colleges, as approved by Human Services faculty advisors. A minimum of twenty (20) of these quarter hours must be completed at NLU.

A “D” grade in any Human Services course will not apply toward the major. Students with a grade of ‘D’ in any Human Services course must retake the course to be eligible to graduate from the Program.
ELECTIVES
Students may need additional hours of electives to complete 180 QH. These hours may be from any field of study and are in addition to other program requirements and elective hours.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
To graduate with a bachelor’s degree from National-Louis University, all students must successfully complete a minimum of 180 QH (120 SH) consisting of courses in general education, the program major, electives and any additional program requirements.
